Hereditary ovalocytosis

An inherited condition in which the normally round red blood cells assume a slightly oval or elliptical shape. Also known as hereditary elliptocytosis . This condition is associated with a mild hemolytic anemia . The disease is occasionally treated by removal of the spleen ( splenectomy ).
